There are so many fire extinguishers and to choose the right type can be a hard task if you not know the right one to choose. The are many different fire classes, the are 5 big categories of fire extinguisher types:
Class A – used for ordinary combustible materials like wood, paper and most common things that we have in our rooms.
- Geometric symbol: green triangle;
- pictogram: garbage can and wood pile burning;
Class B – is used when the fire involves flammable or combustible liquids like gas.
- geometric symbol: red square;
- pictogram: fuel container and burning puddle;
Class C – fire extinguisher from this category are used for fire involving electrical equipment.
- geometric symbol: blue circle;
- pictogram: electric plug and burning outlet;
Class D – extinguishers are used for combustible metals, usually in laboratories.
- geometric symbol: yellow decagon(star);
- pictogram: burning gear and bearing;
Class K - this type of fire extinguisher are used in the kitchen where are involved cooking oils and fat.
- geometric symbol: black hexagon;
- pictogram: pan burning;
So please remember to check the fire extinguisher type before you try to attack the fire.

Although not a replacement to a traditional fire extinguisher, a fire blanket can be a very useful adjunct to one, especially in the kitchen. Fire blankets work by smothering the fire. They work very well on small fires, and they are particularly useful in two common circumstances:
A small one pan grease fire- here, you don’t ruin the food and make a big mess by spraying chemicals over everything on the stove top.
When a person’s clothing has caught on fire- again, here the chemicals could cause extra problems in a burn or if they get into the eyes or mouth.
I have used one on both sets of circumstances, and everyone was pleased how they worked out.
You need to know when to use a fire blanket, but if you know that, they are a very useful thing to have in the kitchen or on a camping trip.

A practical understanding of fire protection systems is essential to effective management of a fire scene. Fire Protection Systems focuses on the operational characteristics and abilities of different types of systems and equipment that are used during fire department operations to access a water source, apply a suppression agent to control a particular type of fire, provide information concerning the location of a fire, and more. Systematic, easy-to-understand coverage thoroughly explores various types of active fire protection systems and components, how they operate, and the requirements for installation, making this a valuable learning tool for firefighters and a handy resource for design professionals.

Although effective fire sprinkler systems are crucial to public safety, for years, the designers of those systems had few published resources to reference and guide them through their design processes.
The first edition of this book changed all that, and now The Design and Layout of Fire Sprinkler Systems Second Edition suits their needs even better.Written and thoroughly updated by a fire prevention engineer with more than 20 years of experience, this book provides a complete, systematic introduction to automatic fire sprinkler design and layout, from design basics, code requirements, and pipe hanging to hydraulic calculations, retrofits, and details on fire pumps.
The author carefully outlines all of a designer’s responsibilities and includes an entire chapter dedicated to preparing for the NICET exam.More than 150 sample diagrams, checklists, sample forms, spec sheets, photographs, and a glossary complement the text, and the larger page size of this edition permits clear presentation of diagrams and schematics.
The Design and Layout of Fire Sprinkler Systems not only builds the foundation and skills of newcomers to the field, but also provides an outstanding reference for fire safety professionals, building inspectors, insurance underwriters, and municipal officials.

ISO 11602-2:2000 Fire protection, Portable and wheeled fire extinguishers: Inspection and maintenance
This part of ISO 11602 specifies the inspection, maintenance, and periodic testing of portable and wheeled fire extinguishers.Portable fire extinguishers are intended as a first line of defence against fires of limited size. They are needed, even if the property is equipped with automatic sprinklers, standpipe and hose, or other fixed protection equipment.
This part of ISO 11602 is not applicable to permanently installed systems for fire extinguishment, even though portions of such systems may be portable (such as hose and nozzles attached to a fixed supply of extinguishing media).Extinguishers for use on board aircraft, watercraft and vehicles are considered to be outside the scope of this part of ISO 11602. This title may contain less than 24 pages of technical content.

The 2009-2014 World Outlook for Hand-Portable Carbon Dioxide Fire Extinguishers covers the world outlook for hand-portable carbon dioxide fire extinguishers across more than 200 countries. For each year reported, estimates are given for the latent demand, or potential industry earnings (P.I.E.), for the country in question (in millions of U.S. dollars), the percent share the country is of the region and of the globe. These comparative benchmarks allow the reader to quickly gauge a country vis-à-vis others. Using econometric models which project fundamental economic dynamics within each country and across countries, latent demand estimates are created.
